Hey you guys, how are you? How are you coping with quarantine???

With social media going crazy and the recent very sad events, I had to take a break from writing, posting and sharing my thoughts. My disappointment in humanity knows no bounds…..

That being said, I want this blog to remain focused on beauty, hair care and fashion; my original mission.

I will resist the temptation to argue with racists. I will not go back and forth and waste my energy on internet trolls.

I will still be focusing on lifting others and supporting women who strive to be the very best version of themselves. I want this to be a safe space for positivity and escapism. I hope that you and your families are safe and well, safe from the both viruses; corona and racial hatred.

On a more positive note…

I recently started my very own Youtube channel!

Please check out my recent video featuring clothing from Boohoo.com:

Self love during these sad times is KEY

So. For today’s post, I want to share something for my curly girls. A secret which has been slaying me for months now.

I have seen SO many opinions and reviews on the Maui Moisture conditioners, on the fact that alcohol is high up on their ingredients list, on the DMDM Hydantoin which is used in some of their products, on how drying their products can be….

Commonly discussed issues with Maui Moisture ingredients:
DMDM Hydantoin, used in their Curl Quench Coconut Oil Smoothie and some of their conditioners is considered dangerous because of its toxic formaldehyde releasing component, although the percentage is so small that it has been approved safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel. It can cause irritation or an allergic reaction on sensitive skin and is banned in Japan.
Microcrystalline Wax (Microcristallina) is found in their curl smoothie and hair masks. This type of wax is not water soluble and therfore needs a cleansing agent to remove it. If you only co-wash (wash with conditioner to aid moisture retention) then the use of this product would cause a hell of a lot of build up after a while, creating a barrier between your hair and the nutrients /moisture that it desperately needs.

This Maui Moisture Vanilla butter is my FAVE. There is no substitute!

Vanilla Bean Hair Butter:

Superdrug.com:

Smooth, and defrizz the most style-stubborn locks with these unique blends. Kukui nut oil, an ancient Hawaiian secret used for its humidity resistant abilities, is blended into this hydrating hair butter, along with vanilla bean and creamy cocoa butter. It helps make the most style-stubborn locks softened, smoothed and frizz free!

My experience:
I am very anal about what shampoo and conditioners that I use. My hair is naturally very dry and must be conditioned every 3 days or so to continue looking like…well, hair. I used the Maui Moisture shampoo once and decided that it was not for me, I found it stripped my hair too much. The conditioner didn’t seem bad, but I did not see any ground-breaking difference to my hair. I can see that using them both regularly, with the questionable ingredients used, could be damaging for my hair in the long run.

Leave me a comment down below if you would like to see which shampoos/conditioners I do recommend for curly hair!

BUT.

I have tried so many alternatives and I cannot find anything which coats, moisturises and protects my hair as much as the Vanilla Bean Hair Butter or Curl Quench Coconut Oil Curl Smoothie. Really. Truly. I kid you not.
I have tried Shea Moisture, Jane Carter Solution, Aunt Jackie’s, Beautiful Textures, As I am. I have tried coiling jelly, natural hold gels, Curl butters, leave ins followed by sealing oils… so many products and so many combinations. NONE seem to have the hold and moisturising powers of these two magic products from Maui Moisture. The way that this butter smooths my hair and provides a long lasting sealant….it is just magic.

I have spent hours trying to work out what ingredient or combination thereof manages to tame my curls and even baby hairs for up to 12 hours. My hair is tame, curly and shiny right until the end of the day!

If you have 3c or curlier hair like mine, I urge you to try one of these on your hair and see the results for yourself.

My review of their newest release, detangling creams:

2 things to note:
-I do wash my hair regularly, so perhaps I cannot see any kind of long term dryness which other may experience if they are not cleansing regularly. I do get a build up, but I always have, due to the other creams and gels etc that I use, so I must cleanse my hair at least once a week, or I can co-wash every 3 days roughly.
-I ONLY ever use these two products on wet hair. I spray my hair every morning before I style, to detangle. So, this product seems to help lock in moisture (It does NOT provide it, this is important).

Thank you for that info on Maui products. I do not wash my hair myself, I go to the Salon bi-weekly, sometimes weekly depending on my style. I have decided to go completely natural this summer. Meaning, I have my stylist braid my hair while itโ€™s wet, using a gel or some kind of leave in conditioner. I keep it braided for a day or two then take the braids out. This gives me the natural wavy style that I like. Based on your comments, I will try the Maui Vanilla Bean Hair Butter.

The vanilla butter really works like magic for me particularly if my hair is braided or twisted.
It is important to be aware of the ingredients though, so I’ve tried to include information in the simplest way possible!
Do try it and always do what works for you x
